Pleural Effusion is an accumulation of food , which is lies between the layers of the membrane that lines the lungs and chest cavity (pleural cavity). This fluid can be divided into in four categories-
1) Serous Fluid
2) Blood
3) Pus
4) Chyle
Causes of Pleural Effusion
Our body produce small amount of pleural fluid to lubricate the surface of the pleural (A thin membrane which lines the lungs and the chest cavity). The pleural effusion is an access collection of this food. There are two type of pleural effusion can be found-
1) Transudative pleural effusions
2) Exudative effusions
The main cause of Transudative pleural effusions is abnormal lung pressure. Congestive heart failure can be another cause of Transudative pleural effusions.Exudative Effusion is caused by the inflammation of the pleura. This is caused by lung disease or other lung infection.
Signs and Symptoms
Some symptoms of Pleural Effusion are given below-
1) Breathlessness
2) Chest Pain
3) Cough
4) frequently breathing
5) Hiccups
6) Weight loss
7) fever
8) stomach problems
Treatment for Pleural Effusion
The goal of the treatment is to removing fluid , put a stop to its reaccumulation, and check the causes of the fluid buildup, because the treatment for pleural effusion is depend upon its causes .If the fluid collection is large and you feel breathlessness then therapeutic thoracentesis is helpful. The removal of the fluid can be done by placing a small needle into the area of fluid accumulation and applying suction with a syringe to remove the fluid. Open surgery is necessary in the severe cases.
