Emphysema is defined as a condition that is caused by over- inflammation in the lungs( which is called air sacs or alveoli). A breakdown of the walls of the alveoli is the main cause of this over –inflammation. Because of this over –inflammation , there is decrease in respiratory system and breathlessness.
Causes of Emphysema
Cigarette smoking, Tobacco, other pollutants are the primary causes of Emphysema.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms of the Emphysema are given below -
1) Breathlessness
2) Cough
3) Wheezing
4) Feel difficulty in exercise
5) Fatigue
6) feet and leg swelling
7) anxiety
Treatment for Emphysema
Avoidance of smoking is most effective treatment for this disease. Medications are useful to improve breathing. If you have some respiratory infection then antibiotics may be prescribed. Pulmonary rehabilitation can helps in exercise tolerance.
In the severe cases lung transplantation is an option. In this procedure the damaged portion of the lung is removed.
Prevention
If you want to prevent yourself from this disease then avoid smoking.
