Body Dysmorphic Disorder

INFORMATION ON BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is one of the type of a mental disorder, which involves a disturbed body image in a person mind. Body dysmorphic disorder is generally diagnosed in those who feel bad of their physique or self image, despite the fact there may be no noticeable disfigurement or defect.

Most people wish they could change or improve some aspect of their physical appearance, but people suffering from BDD, generally considered of normal appearance, believe that they are so unspeakably hideous that they are unable to interact with others or function normally for fear of ridicule and humiliation at their appearance.

CAUSES OF BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER
So far the exact cause of body dysmorphic disorder is unknown. But some of the researcher believe that biological, psychological and perhaps even social or cultural factors contribute in the development of the body dysmorphic disorder..

SYMPTOMS OF BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER
    1. Inability to look at ones own reflection.
    2. Compulsive skin-touching, especially to measure or feel the perceived defect
    3. Reassurance seeking from loved ones.
    4. Social withdrawal and co-existent depression.
    5. Obsessive viewing of certain favorite celebrities or models the person suffering from BDD would like to resemble.
    6. Excessive grooming behaviors: combing hair, plucking eyebrows, shaving.
    7. In obscure cases patients have performed self plastic surgery, including liposuction and various implants with disastrous results.

TREATMENT OF BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER
The main aim for the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder is to control the faulty thought of the subject. there are various option available for the treatment.

1. Cognitive-behavior therapy:- which includes education about body dysmorphic disorder. The cognitive aspects involve discovering, challenging and changing the underlying negative thoughts and beliefs the sufferer keeps thinking.

2. Medicinal therapy:- Insufficient use of serotonin in the brain has been implicated with the disorder and so SSRI drugs are also commonly and with some success used in the treatment of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Usually medicinal treatment also includes the use of an anxyolitic.
