Rickets is a bone disease generally found in children. Rickets is vitamin D deficiency disease so; generally occur in rapidly growth period. In child age, calcium and phosphate are necessary for fast growing and in absence of these minerals a child may have Rickets.
If rickets happens in young age or old age then this disease known as Osteomalacia. Due to deficiency of calcium bones becomes weak and may likely to break.
Causes:
As we know that calcium is very important nutrient for our bones and increases the strength and Stiffness of bones. The absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our intestine may be possible by vitamin D. So, vitamin D formation is essential for our healthy bones.
We can get vitamin D from main two sources. The most common source is our skin. In presence of sunlight our skin forms vitamin D3. Another source is a perfect diet. Milk products help in formation of vitamin D in our body.
Children may be suffer from rickets disease through hereditary because if a mother have vitamin D deficiency then her child may have low vitamin d level.
Symptoms:
How much vitamin D deficiency children have? The answer of this question is very important because symptoms of rickets will be depend on vitamin D level in body.
Following are some symptoms that may be seen during rickets in a child.
Pain in bones,
Bones deformity,
Growth disturbance,
Low calcium level in the blood,
Dental problems,
Risk of fractures etc.
Prevention and Treatment:
At low level rickets is not risky because vitamin D level can be improved by taking vitamin D supplements. Exposure to sunshine, halibut-liver oil, cod liver oil and viosterol are very important sources of vitamin D. A perfect and healthy diet in children can prevent them from rickets.
