Pierre Robin Syndrome is a condition of genetic disorder that is found in children by birth. Pierre Robin Syndrome - other name - Robin sequence is a disorder in which children have very small lower jaw. Because of very small jaw the chin is not very highlighted and this condition is known as micrognathia. Child have problem in his tongue because it comes back and downward again and again.
Like any other genetic disorders the chances for happening pierre robin syndrome in a child is 50:50. If a mother have defective gene than her child may be normal or abnormal depending on gene transfer in child. The tongue tends to fall back and downward (glossoptosis) and there is cleft soft palate.
Causes & Symptoms:
No specific cause is defined for Pierre Robin Syndrome. Mutation may be the reason of
such kind of conditions.
- Very small jaw
- Large-appearing tongue in relation to lower jaw
- Jaw placed unusually far back in the throat
- High-arched palate
- Cleft soft palate
- Small opening in the roof of the mouth, which causes choking.
- Natal teeth means teeth appearing in new born baby.
The mild conditions of Pierre Robin Syndrome gradually improve with the time. The lower jaw comes slowly in its actual condition with child's age. In severe cases surgery may require so that a tube can be transplant to prevent upper airway blockage.
