Fractures

Our Skeletal System is mainly composed of bones, the connective tissue. A human body consists of 206 bones and these bones are hollow and laminated rod of calcium phosphate and collagen. The hollow center part of bone is known as bone marrow. When a portion of a bone or whole bone becomes crack, a Fracture occurs.

Type of fracture:

Fracture according to break in bones:

  1. Closed or simple fracture, in which break happens only in bone not in skin.
  2. Open or compound fracture, in which break happen in bone and skin also.
  3. Segmental or multiple fracture, in which break happens at two or more places.
  4. Comminuted fracture, in which break happens in the bone and bone divided into pieces.
Fracture according to type of break in bones:
  1. Greenstick fracture in which incomplete fracture occurs. The bone is not completely break and separated.
  2. Transverse fracture in which the break happens horizontally across the bone.
  3. Spiral fracture when the break happens spirals around the bone.
  4. Oblique fracture in which break happens diagonally in the bone.
  5. Compression fracture in which the bone is crushed.

Fracture according to location of break in bones:
Fracture may be occurring in any of our 206 bones, some are described below.
  1. Skull fracture - break occurs in skull.
  2. Face bone fracture - break occurs in any bone of face like nose bone, chin bone etc.
  3. Rib fracture - break occurs in any rib of our lungs.
  4. Pelvis fracture - break occurs in pelvis.
  5. Shoulder fracture - break occurs in shoulder bone.
  6. Arm fracture - break occurs in bone of arms.
  7. Hip fracture - break occurs in hip bone, may be happen due to osteoporosis.
  8. Hand fracture - break occurs in hand bones.
  9. Fractured Femur - break occurs in femur bone.
  10. Ankle and Foot fracture - break occurs in ankle or foot bones (fingers and toe bones).

Causes and Symptoms:

Fractures may be possible due to road accidents, falls from any height, direct hit by any hard thing, repetitive force and stress on bones etc. When a person has a hip cancer then it can be very severe situation. Swelling may be occur on hips and patient will have pain in movement in legs and back. I a person have a leg fracture then he may be unable to move his leg. Instead of these some are the common symptoms that may be happen in any fracture.
  1. Pain in the fractured area.
  2. Swelling in the fractured area.
  3. Difficulty in movement of the fractured area.
  4. Warmth, bruising, or redness at the fractured area.
Preventions and Treatments:

Initial treatment of fracture should be taken carefully because some fracture may be reason of life long threatening. If a open or compound fracture is occur then firstly try to stop bleeding. In case of closed or simple fracture the ice pack may be used to control or limit the swelling. Proper medication is required after a fracture and some specific drugs are also required for pain control. Surgery may be require in severe bone breakage.

Below tips should be follow to avoid an accident.

We have to use helmets while driving.
Atmosphere should be safe and dry to avoid accidents.
Should use handrails on stairs and non-skid mats near bathrooms and other wet places.
