Piriformis Syndrome

INFORMATION ON PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
We can say Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder which is result of compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve by the Piriformis muscle. The Piriformis muscle is a long, narrow, pyramid-shaped muscle, located deep under the buttocks, that runs from the base of the spine to the top of the femur. Piriformis syndrome is usually caused by traumatic injury to the buttocks or hip region. Sciatic irritation causes nagging aches, pain, tingling and numbness.
CAUSES OF PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
The factors which are responsible for the development of Piriformis syndrome are:-

1. Trauma to the buttocks or gluteal region
2. Long-sitting hours.
SYMPTOMS OF PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
The various symptoms that are shown by subject with Piriformis syndrome:-

1. Chronic pain in the buttocks
2. Pain with bowel movements.
3. Pain when getting up from bed.
4. Intolerance to sitting.
DIAGNOSIS OF PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
Clinically Piriformis can be diagnosed by following procedure:-


1. CT scan.
2. MRI.
3. EMG.
TREATMENT OF PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
Treatment for Piriformis syndrome starts with stretching exercises and massage, and the activities such as running and bicycling. Some physician recommends formal physical therapy, including the teaching of stretching techniques, manual massage, and strengthening of the core muscles to reduce strain on the Piriformis muscle. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Botox, or corticosteroid injections can be prescribed. Occasionally surgery may be recommended.
