Periventricular Leukomalacia
INFORMATION ON PERIVENTRICULAR LEUKOMALACIA
Periventricular leukomalacia may be defined as the neurological disorder which results when white matter of the brain destroyed due to softening of the brain tissue.
Periventricular leukomalacia can affect newborns, premature babies.
CAUSES OF PERIVENTRICULAR LEUKOMALACIA
Periventricular leukomalacia is caused by a lack of oxygen or blood flow to the Periventricular area of the brain, which results in the death or loss of brain tissue.
SYMPTOMS OF PERIVENTRICULAR LEUKOMALACIA
Various symptoms that are shown by subject with Periventricular leukomalacia are:-
1. motor disorders (especially of the lower limbs)
2. delay in mental development
3. coordination problems
4. vision
5. hearing impairments.
6. wobbling eyes
7. refractive error.
DIAGNOSIS OF PERIVENTRICULAR LEUKOMALACIA
Periventricular leukomalacia can be diagnosed clinically by following procedures:-
1. Ultrasound
2. MRI.
3. EEG.
4. CT scan.
TREATMENT OF PERIVENTRICULAR LEUKOMALACIA
So far there is no specific treatment for Periventricular leukomalacia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Children with Periventricular leukomalacia should receive regular medical screenings to determine appropriate interventions.
