Perineural Cysts

INFORMATION ON PERINEURAL CYSTS
Perineural cysts may be defined as fluid-filled sacs that most often affect nerve roots in the sacrum, the group of bones at the base of the spine. Perineural cysts compresses nerve roots, causing lower back pain, shock-like or burning pain in the lower back, buttocks, and down one leg to below the knee, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and some loss of feeling or control of movement in the leg or foot. Pressure on the nerves next to the Perineural cysts can also cause pain.
CAUSES OF PERINEURAL CYSTS
The various events which are responsible for the development of Perineural cysts are:-

1. Prolong sitting.
2. Prolong standing.
3. Traumatic injury.
4. Herpes simplex virus.
SYMPTOMS OF PERINEURAL CYSTS
The various symptoms which are shown by the subject with Perineural cysts are:-

1. Back pain.
2. Sciatica.
3. Shock sensations in the lower back, buttocks, thigh, and down the leg to below the knee.
4. Loss of bladder control and problems with sexual functioning.
DIAGNOSIS OF PERINEURAL CYSTS
In order to diagnose the symptoms of Perineural cyst following clinical examination is utmost important:-

1. MRI.
2. CT scan.
3. EMG.
TREATMENT OF PERINEURAL CYSTS
Using a needle to drain fluid from Perineural cysts may temporarily relieve the symptoms, after some time the cysts will refill with cerebrospinal fluid and the symptoms will again visible. Similarly, steroid injections can provide short-term pain relief. Pain may also be temporarily controlled by injecting the cysts with fibrin glue. Using dietary supplements to decrease the body's alkalinity may prevent Perineural cysts from filling with more fluid. Medications such as anticonvulsants and antidepressants may be helpful.
When pain is intolerable or when weakness or other neurological symptoms become severe, surgery is employed in order to remove the cysts.
