Ohtahara Syndrome
INFORMATION ON OHTAHARA SYNDROME
Ohtahara syndrome or Early Infantile epileptic encephalopathy (EIEE) can be defined as a neurological disorder which is characterized by seizures. This disorder affects infants, generally within the first three months of life.
CAUSES OF OHTAHARA SYNDROME
The main factors which leads to the development of Ohtahara syndrome are:-
1. Metabolic disorders.
2. Structural damage.
SYMPTOMS OF OHTAHARA SYNDROME
1. Seizures.
2. Mental retardation.
3. Developmental impairments.
4. Learning disability.
5. Fits.
DIAGNOSIS OF OHTAHARA SYNDROME
Clinically Ohtahara syndrome can be identified by following tests:-
1. EEG.
2. CT scan.
3. Urine test.
4. Spectroscopy.
TREATMENT OF OHTAHARA SYNDROME
So far there is no cure for Ohtahara syndrome. Some drug therapies are there but they have limited effect.
Antiepileptic drugs are used to control seizures, but they are usually not very effective for this disorder. Corticosteroids are occasionally helpful. In cases where there is a focal brain lesion (or damage contained to one area of the brain) surgery may be beneficial. Other therapies are symptomatic and supportive.
