Myotonia
INFORMATION ON MYOTONIA:-
Myotonia may be defined as a neurological disorder which is characterized by the slow relaxation of the muscles after voluntary contraction or electrical stimulation. Repeated effort is needed to relax the muscles, and the condition improves after the muscles have warmed-up.
CAUSES OF MYOTONIA:-
The main consequences which are responsible for the development of myotonia are:-
1. Hereditary.
2. Abnormality in the muscle membrane.
3. Exposure to cold.
4. Eating foods that are potassium-rich.
SYMPTOMS OF MYOTONIA:-
1. Trouble in releasing grip on objects.
2. Difficulty rising from a sitting position.
3. Awkward gait.
4. Inability of the muscle to quickly relax after voluntary contraction.
5. gagging.
6. difficulty in swallowing
DIAGNOSIS OF MYOTONIA:-
Clinically myotonia can be diagnosed by:-
1. muscles biopsy.
2. electromyography.
3. genetic testing.
TREATMENT OF MYOTONIA:-
Treatment for myotonia may include medicines like quinine, phenytoin, mexiletine, and other anticonvulsant drugs. Another way of treating subject suffering from myotonia is by physical therapy.
