Myasthenia Gravis
INFORMATION ON MYASTHENIA GRAVIS:-
Myasthenia gravis may be defined as a complex, autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy neuromuscular connections in human body. Myasthenia gravis causes problems with the nerves that communicate with muscles. Myasthenia gravis affects the voluntary muscles of the body, especially the eyes, mouth, throat, and limbs.
CAUSES OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS:-
Myasthenia gravis may be transferred to babies from mothers with Myasthenia gravis or the disorder may develop spontaneously later in childhood.
SYMPTOMS OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS:-
1. Poor sucking capability.
2. Weakness of arms and legs.
3. Problem in chewing and swallowing.
4. Drooping eyelids.
DIAGNOSIS OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS:-
Clinically myasthenia gravis can be diagnosed by:-
1. Blood tests
2. Genetic tests.
3. Electromyography.
4. Muscle biopsy
TREATMENT OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS:-
So far there is no cure for myasthenia gravis, but the symptoms can sometimes be controlled. Myasthenia gravis is a life-long medical condition and the key to manage myasthenia gravis is early detection.
The goal of treatment of myasthenia gravis is to prevent respiratory problems and provide adequate nutritional care to the child since the swallowing and breathing muscles are affected by this condition.
Treatment may include Medications and surgical removal of the thymus gland.
