Mitochondrial Myopathy
INFORMATION ON MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
Mitochondrial Myopathy may be defined as a group of diseases that affects muscle, but Mitochondrial Myopathy may also affect every other part of the body including the brain and the eye.
SYNONYMS OF MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
1. Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia.
2. Kearns-Sayre Syndrome.
3. Lactic Acidosis
4. Leigh’s disease
5. Mitochondrial Cytopathy
6. Mitochondrial Encephalopathy
7. Myoclonus Epilepsy Associated With Ragged-Red Fibers.
8. Stroke-like Episodes.
CAUSES OF MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
The main factor which is responsible for the development of mitochondrial Myopathy is mutation in gene.
SYMPTOMS OF MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
1. Weakness of the arms and legs.
2. Loss of memory.
3. Sensitivity to light.
4. Hearing difficulties.
5. Droopy eyelids.
6. Nausea.
7. Headache.
8. Breathlessness.
DIAGNOSIS OF MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
Clinically mitochondrial Myopathy can be diagnosed by:-
1. Muscle biopsy.
2. Blood test.
3. MRI.
4. CT scan.
TREATMENT OF MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY:-
There are no miracle cures for mitochondrial Myopathy. Many of the problems associated with mitochondrial Myopathies can be treat effectively. For example, diabetes can be treated with tablets or insulin; pacemakers are very effective for the disturbances of heart rhythm. Muscle fatigue can be improved by regular gentle exercise.
