Meningitis And Encephalitis

INFORMATION ON MENINGITIS AND ENCEPHALITIS
Meningitis and encephalitis are inflammatory diseases of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and are caused by bacterial or viral infections. Infections in the brain and spinal cord can cause dangerous inflammation. Viral meningitis is sometimes called aseptic meningitis to indicate it is not the result of bacterial infection and cannot be treated with antibiotics.

CAUSES OF MENINGITIS AND ENCEPHALITIS

1. Sudden fever.
2. Headache.
3. Vomiting.
4. Heightened sensitivity to light.
5. Stiff neck and back.
6. Confusion and impaired judgment.
7. Drowsiness.
8. Weak muscles.
9. Irritability.
DIAGNOSIS OF MENINGITIS AND ENCEPHALITIS
Test under diagnosis are:

1. Blood Test.
2. X-Rays.
3. Physical therapy.
4. Computerised tomography scan.
TREATMENT OF MENINGITIS AND ENCEPHALITIS
Meningitis and encephalitis are usually caused by viruses or bacteria. Antiviral medications may be used for removal of severe viral infections. Antibiotics may be prescribed for bacterial infections. Anticonvulsants are used to prevent or treat seizures. Corticosteroids are used to reduce brain swelling and inflammation. Sedatives may be needed for irritability or restlessness. Over-the-counter medications may be used for fever and headache. Individuals with encephalitis or bacterial meningitis are usually hospitalized for treatment.
