Melkersson Rosenthal Syndrome
INFORMATION ON MELKERSSON-ROSENTHAL SYNDROME:-
Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome may be defined as rare neurological disorder which is characterized by facial paralysis, swelling of the face and lips and the development of folds and furrows in the tongue.
CAUSES OF MELKERSSON-ROSENTHAL SYNDROME:-
So far there is no particular cause has been found. But it is been estimated that genetic disorder can be one of the cause which is responsible for development of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome.
SYMPTOMS OF MELKERSSON-ROSENTHAL SYNDROME:-
1. Facial swelling
2. Lip swelling
3. Partial facial paralysis
4. Tongue abnormalities
5. Tongue folds
6. Tongue furrows
DIAGNOSIS OF MELKERSSON-ROSENTHAL SYNDROME:-
Clinically Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome can be diagnosed by:-
1. Physical examination.
2. CT scan.
3. X-ray.
TREATMENT OF MELKERSSON-ROSENTHAL SYNDROME:-
Treatment is based on symptoms and may include medicinal therapies in company of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids to reduce swelling, as well as antibiotics and immunosuppressant. Surgery can also come into play to relieve pressure on the facial nerves and to reduce swelling in tissue, but its results are not satisfactory. Massage and electrical stimulation may also be prescribed by doctor.
