Locked In Syndrome
INFORMATION ON LOCKED-IN SYNDROME:-
Locked-in syndrome may be defined as a rare neurological disorder which is characterized by complete paralysis of voluntary muscles which takes part in movement of all parts of the body.
Individuals with locked-in syndrome are conscious in state and have cognitive function, but are unable to speak or move.
CAUSES OF LOCKED-IN SYNDROME:-
The main factors which are responsible for development of locked-in syndrome are:-
1. Brain injury.
2. Vascular diseases.
3. Demyelinating diseases.
4. Overdose of some medicines.
SYMPTOMS OF LOCKED-IN SYNDROME:-
1. Inability to speak.
2. Inability to move.
DIAGNOSIS OF LOCKED-IN SYNDROME:-
Clinically locked-in syndrome can be diagnosed by:-
1. CT scan.
2. MRI.
TREATMENT OF LOCKED-IN SYNDROME:-
There is no cure for locked-in syndrome, nor is there a standard course of treatment. Functional neuromuscular stimulation may help activate some paralyzed muscles. Several devices to help communication are available. Other treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
