Lissencephaly

INFORMATION ON LISSENCEPHALY:-
Lissencephaly is a group of disorders that is related with abnormal neuronal migration during the gestational period.
The condition is characterized by absence or incomplete development of the ridges or convolutions of the outer region of the brain causing the brain's surface to appear unusually smooth
SYNONYMS OF LISSENCEPHALY:-
1. Agyria
2. Lissencephaly
CAUSES OF LISSENCEPHALY:-
The main causes which are responsible for Lissencephaly are:-

1. Viral infection.
2. Insufficient blood flow in brain.
3. Gene mutation.
SYMPTOMS OF LISSENCEPHALY:-
1. Seizures.
2. Severe or profound mental retardation.
3. Feeding difficulties.
4. Growth retardation.
5. Impaired motor abilities.
DIAGNOSIS OF LISSENCEPHALY:-
Clinically Lissencephaly can be diagnosed by:-
1. MRI.
2. CT scan.
3. Ultrasound.
TREATMENT OF LISSENCEPHALY:-
Treatment for those with Lissencephaly is symptomatic and mainly depends on the severity and the locations of the brain malformations. Supportive care must be needed to help with comfort and nursing needs. Seizures can be controlled with medication.
