Leukodystrophy
INFORMATION ON LEUKODYSTROPHY:-
Leukodystrophy may be defined a group of genetic disorders which are characterized by the imperfect growth/development of the myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers in the brain.
CAUSES OF LEUKODYSTROPHY:-
Mutation in gene is the main reason for the development of Leukodystrophy.
SYMPTOMS OF LEUKODYSTROPHY:-
1. Mental deterioration.
2. Seizures.
3. Impaired swallowing.
4. Paralysis.
5. Blindness.
6. Loss of mental abilities.
DIAGNOSIS OF LEUKODYSTROPHY:-
Clinically Leukodystrophy can be diagnosed by:-
1. MRI scan.
2. Blood test.
3. Urine test.
4. Electroneurography.
TREATMENT OF LEUKODYSTROPHY:-
To reduce the subject's symptoms and relieve pain, a number of medicines can be prescribed, such as: Muscle relaxants, Seizure medications, Psychiatric medications, Pain medications.
Physical therapy can be employed in order to keep joints flexible and maintain movement as much as possible. Physical therapy helps to delay joint stiffness, or contractures, and reduce loss of function or pain that can result from contractures.
Bone marrow transplant can also proved to be beneficial in order to slow or halt the progression of Leukodystrophy However; it has only possible in subjects in the early course of the disease.
