Kugelberg Welander
INTRODUCTION TO KUGELBERG WELANDER DISEASE:-
Kugelberg-Welander is a rare inherited neurological disorder that causes a progressive destruction of parts of the spinal cord. Kugelberg Welander affects all races and both males and females equally, although the disease is more severe in males.
CAUSE OF KUGELBERG WELANDER DISEASE:-
Disorderness in gene is the main factor which is responsible for the disease called Kugelberg Welander disease.
SYMPTOMS OF KUGELBERG WELANDER DISEASE:-
1. The legs are usually affected earlier and more severely than the arms.
2. The muscles that are affected first are the ones closest to the trunk. Muscles further away are secondarily affected.
3. A small tremor may be seen in the outstretched fingers, along with muscle cramps.
4. One third of patients with this syndrome may also experience both facial and jaw weakness.
5. Parents may report delayed developmental milestones or decreased athletic abilities in their children.
DIAGNOSIS OF KUGELBERG WELANDER DISEASE:-
Clinical methods for the diagnosis of Kugelberg Welander disease are:-
1. Biopsy.
2. EMG.
TREATMENT OF KUGELBERG WELANDER DISEASE:-
At this time, there is no cure for Kugelberg-Welander syndrome. Physical therapy is very important to help maintain joint mobility, and to prevent leg and arm stiffness by stretching. Occupational therapy can help find ways for your child to alter the activities in school and at home.
