Kleine Levin Syndrome
INFORMATION ON KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME:-
Kleine-Levin Syndrome may be defined as rare disorder characterized by the need for excessive amounts of sleep. The subject becomes progressively drowsier and sleeps for most of the day and night, and in some cases requires excessive food intake.
CAUSES OF KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME:-
Although the causes of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is unknown, but current theory holds that Kleine- Levin syndrome may caused by an inherited autosomal dominant trait which affects the hypothalamus gland.
SYMPTOMS OF KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME:-
1. Irritability.
2. Lack of energy.
3. Day sleeping followed by night.
4. Weak memory.
5. Hypersexual behavior.
6. Excessive eating.
7. Confusion.
8. Restlessness.
DIAGNOSIS OF KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME:-
Clinical methods for determination of Kleine-Levin syndrome are:-
1. CT scan.
2. MRI.
3. EEG.
TREATMENT OF KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME:-
For the treatment of Klein Levin syndrome sedative or hypnotic medications are generally recommended only for insomnia related to a temporary stress because of the potential for addiction or overdose. Trazodone, a sedating antidepressant, is often used for chronic insomnia that does not respond to other treatments.
