Kennedy's Disease
INFORMATION ON KENNEDY'S DISEASE:-
Kennedy disease may be defined as the genetic disease that affects the part of the nervous system which controls voluntary movement of muscles.
SYNONYMS OF KENNEDY’S DISEASE:-
1. X-linked Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy
2. KD
3. SBMA
4. Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy
CAUSES OF KENNEDY’S DISEASE:-
Mutations in genes are the main reason behind the occurrence of Kennedy’s disease.
SYMPTOMS OF KENNEDY’S DISEASE:-
1. Swallowing difficulties.
2. Speech difficulties.
3. Hand tremors.
4. Shaky muscles when holding certain postures.
5. Muscle weakness.
6. Muscle wastage.
7. Muscle twitches.
8. Muscle cramps and spasms.
9. Enlarged calf muscles due to constant cramping.
10. Localized areas of numbness.
11. Absent reflexes.
12. Enlarged breast tissue.
13. Impotence.
14. Low sperm count.
15. Shrunken testicles.
16. Reduced sex drive.
DIAGNOSIS OF KENNEDY’S DISEASE:-
Clinically Kennedy’s disease can be diagnosed by:-
1. Blood test to check for elevated serum.
2. Blood test for Genetic testing.
TREATMENT OF KENNEDY’S DISEASE:-
Currently there is no known cure for Kennedy's disease. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Physical therapy and rehabilitation to slow muscle weakness and atrophy may prove helpful
