HTLV-1 Associated Myelopathy

What is HTLV-1 associated myelopathy
HTLV-1 associated myelopathy is a damage to the nerves (myelopathy) of the spinal cord . It is caused by a infection with the human T lymphotrophic virus type-1 is termed HTLV-1 associated myelopathy.


Causes of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy
HTLV-1 associated myelopathy can be caused by infection with the HLTV-1 virus. Transfused blood, drug injection, sexual intercourse and breast milk are some common routs of transmission.
 
Signs and Symptoms of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy
Symptoms of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy are given below –

1) Muscle weakness
2) Eye inflammation
3) Receptivity
4) Arthritis
5) Patients also can display impaired sense of touch and pain
6) Dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva
7) Skin inflammations
 
Treatment of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy
There is no specific treatment of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy. Steroid medications may helps in lessen symptoms. For muscle spasms, drug therapy with tizanidine or lioresal may useful. To control the leakage of urine (due to malfunction of the urinary sphincter muscle), treatment includes oxybutynin.
