Herpes Zoster can be defined as a reactivation of varicella zoster virus that results a crop of painful blisters over the area of dermatome. It is also known as shingles.
Causes of Herpes Zoster
Varicella zoster virus is a common cause of Herpes Zoster.
Signs And Symptoms of Herpes Zoster
Symptoms of Herpes Zoster are given below -
1) Pain, Itching and tingling
2) Blisters filled with serious fluid.
3) General feeling of unwellness.
4) Chickenpox
5) Flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache and fatigue
6) Problem affecting the eyes
7) Light sensitivity
8) Swollen eyelids
9) Blurred vision
10) Corneal inflammation
11) Rash
12) Red sensitive skin
13) Double Vision
14) Loss of sensation
15) Glaucoma
Treatment of Herpes Zoster
The treatment of Herpes Zoster includes antiviral medicines such as aciclovir (Zovirax tablets/suspension).It reduces the duration of postherpetic neuralgia. If simple antiviral medicines are not effective then stronger pain-relieving treatment is required.
Prevention
People who have never had chickenpox can reduce the risk of getting the virus by avoiding contact with people with chickenpox and shingles. Shingles itself is not preventable.
