what is Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia can be defined as a group of inherited disorders that can be progressive weakness and stiffness of the legs. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is also known as a FSP (Familial Spastic Paraparesis).It can be classified in two parts -
1) Complicated
2) Uncomplicated
In an uncomplicated HSP, Symptoms are generally limited to urinary bladder disturbance, gradual weakening in the legs and impaired sensation in the feet. in more complicated forms it can be accompanied by other neurological symptoms such as dementia, ataxia, icthyosis, retinopathy and optic neuropathy.
Causes of Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia
Genetic disorders are the common causes of Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia.
Signs And Symptoms Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia
The Symptoms of Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia are given below -
1) Progressive difficulty in walking
2) Muscles weakening
3) Urinary Problems
4) Spasticity (increase in muscle tone that results stiffness)
5) Abnormal gait
6) Decreased sense of balance
7) Visual disturbance
8) fasciculations
9) Seizures
10) Dementia
11) Marked muscle wasting
12) Peripheral neuropathy
13) Peripheral neuropathy
Treatment of Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia
There is no possible treatment for Hereditary Spastic Paraplgia. Symptomatic treatment or regular physical therapy is sometimes helpful. Physical therapy can improve muscle strength and preserving range of motion.
