Head Injury

What is Head Injury

Head Injury is defined as a trauma to the head or in other words we can say that Refers to an injury of the head and/or brain (including lacerations and contusions of the head, scalp and/or forehead).
Causes of Head Injuries
The causes of head injury includes home and occupational accidents, traffic accidents, assaults and falls. There are several types of head injury. It may be closed and open. In closed head injury the skull is not broken.
Signs and Symptoms of Head Injuries
Common symptoms of head injuries are –

1) Confusion
2) Personality change
3) Seizures
4) Nausea and vomiting
5) Headaches
6) only to deteriorate later
7) a lucid interval, during which a patient appears conscious.
In the case of skull fracture, symptoms include wounds or bruises on the scalp or face, leaking cerebrospinal fluid and visible deformity or depression in the head or face.
Treatment of Head Injuries
The treatment of head injuries depends upon the types of injury, overall health, medical history of the patient, patient’s tolerance for specific medications and extent of the head injury. In severe condition the treatment of head injury includes hospitalization for observation, observation, immediate medical attention, topical antibiotic ointment and adhesive bandage, rest, ice and surgery.
Prevention of Head Injury
Always take precautions while driving by wearing helmet, safety belts ….etc for prevention of head injuries.
