Guillain-Barre Syndrome
INFORMATION ON GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME
Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) may be defined as inflammatory disorder in which immune system of human body attacks the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord and parts of the brain itself. Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) is characterized by severe weakness and numbness in legs and arms. Loss of feeling and movement (paralysis) may occur in your legs, arms, upper body and face.
CAUSES OF GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME
The various factors which are responsible for the development of Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) are:-
1. Infectious illness, such as sore throat, diarrhea, cold or flu.
2. Campylobacter bacteria commonly found in undercooked food, especially poultry.
3. Medical procedures including surgery and, in rare cases, influenza immunizations.
SYMPTOMS OF GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME
The various symptoms shown by subjects with Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) are:-
1. Weakness, tingling or loss of sensation that often begins in your feet and legs and spreads to your upper body and arms
2. Moderate pain throughout your body
3. Difficulty breathing
4. Paralysis of your legs, arms, respiratory muscles and face
5. Difficulty with eye movement, facial movement, speaking, chewing or swallowing
6. Very slow heart rate or low blood pressure
7. Difficulty with bladder control or intestinal functions
DIAGNOSIS OF GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME
The various clinically procedures which are used in order to detect Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) are:-
1. EMG.
2. Lumbar puncture.
TREATMENT OF GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME
So far there's no cure for Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS). However, certain therapies are capable of lessen the severity of the illness and accelerate recovery for most people. The general treatment for Guillain-barre syndrome (GBS) is supportive care to help with activities of daily living, such as eating and using the bathroom.
