Chiari malformations also known as Arnold-Chiari malformation are structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and is a congenital anomaly of the brain in which the cerebella tonsils are elongated and pushed down through the opening of the base of the skull blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Most children with these malformations who do not have spina bifida will have the form known as type I.
