Cerebral Hypoxia

INFORMATION ON CEREBRAL HYPOXIA
The term cerebral hypoxia technically refers to a deficiency of oxygen supply to the cerebral hemispheres, but it is more characteristic used to refer to a deficient of oxygen supply to the complete brain.
CAUSES OF CEREBRAL HYPOXIA
There are several causes of cerebral hypoxia. These include:-
Choking
Overdose of Drug
Asphyxiation caused by smoke inhalation
Very low blood pressure
Strangulation
Wound during birth
Cardiac arrest (when the heart discontinue pumping)
Poisoning carbon monoxide
High altitudes
Drowning
Compression of the trachea
Complications through general anesthesia
Diseases that paralyze the respiratory muscles
Brain cells are extremely sensitive to oxygen deficiency. Some brain cells start dying less than 5 minutes after their oxygen supply is blocked. As a result, brain hypoxia can kill or cause severe brain damage.
This is an severe condition and the sooner medical attention is given and the oxygen supply restored, there is less chances of severe brain damage and death.
SYMPTOMS OF CEREBRAL HYPOXIA
In mild cases, hypoxia causes only insensitivity, poor judgment, and motor in-coordination. In severe cases result in a state of complete lack of knowledge and Insensitivity -- brain stem reflexes, including pupillary react to light and breathing reflex, stop.

Only blood pressure and cardiac function are maintained. If this continue, brain death is certain.
There is a chance of coma if the deficiency of oxygen to the brain is limited to a very short period of time, coma may be reversible with unstable levels of return to function, depending on the extent of injury. Sometimes fits may occur, which may be regular. (status epilepticus).
TREATMENT OF CEREBRAL HYPOXIA
Treatment of Cerebral Hypoxia depends on different cause.
-Mainly, basic life-support has to be ensured.
-Mechanical ventilation is necessary to use to secure the airway
-Blood pressure must be maintain with fluids, blood products, or medicine.
-Heart rate must be controlled
-Fits, if they occur, must be treated
-If seizures occur, medicine are used to hold back them, including phenytoin, phenobarbital, valproic acid, and general anesthetics.
