Brain Injury
The destruction or degeneration of brain cells is called Brain Injury. It results balance and movement problems, inability to care one self and speech and language difficulties There are two types of Brain Injury -
1) Traumatic Brain Injury
2) Acquired Brain Injury
Causes of Brain injury
Traumatic Brain Injury can be caused by an external physical force .It may produce the altered state of consciousness that results in an impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning.
These impairments may be temporary or permanent and responsible to causing total or partial physical disability.
Acquired brain injury takes place at the cellular level within the brain. The common causes of Acquired brain injury are given below -
1) Heart attack
2) Arteriovenous malformation
3) Intracranial surgery
4) Aneurysm
5) Trauma to the head and/or neck
6) Airway obstruction
7) Certain venereal diseases
8) Uremic encephalopathy
9) Seizure disorders
10) Insect-carried diseases

Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury
1) Vision changes
2) slow pulse
3) Respiratory failure
4) Headache
5) Difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing
6) Lethargy
7) Loss of bowel control or bladder control
8) Spinal fluid
9) Poor coordination
Symptoms of Acquired Brain Injuries
1) Hostility
2) Restlessness
3) Depression
4) Muscle movement disorders
5) Psychosis
Treatment of Brain Injury
Treatment of brain injury depends upon its type. Miner brain injury can be treated at home, it includes bed rest, fluids and with a mild pain reliever (Tylenol), Ice is used to reduce pain and swelling, Cuts may be numbed with a medication .In severe cases, Hospitalization is required.
Mostly the head injury may cause elevated pressure within the skull. If the pressure is too high, surgery is required to decompress the brain. To prevent seizures, medication may require. Antibiotics are usually not required.
Prevention of Brain Injury
Following precautions can be taken to prevent Brain injury:--
1) always wears helmets when driving
2) Safety belts, car seats, and airbags must be used properly
3) Don’t drink while driving
