Benign Essential BlepharospasmWhat is progressive neurological disorder which is characterized by a involuntary muscle contractions and spasms of the eyelid muscles. It is a form of dystonia. In short it is known as BEB.It begins gradually with occasional eye blinking or irritation.
Causes of Benign Essential Blepharospasm
Common causes are given below -
1) Recurrent corneal erosion
2) CS gas
3) Corneal abrasion
4) Meige blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia syndrome
5) Salzmann's nodular degeneration of cornea
Signs and Symptoms of Benign Essential Blepharospasm
Symptoms of Benign Essential Blepharospasm are given below -
1) gradual increase in blinking or eye irritation.
2) Fatigue
3) Emotional tension
4) Sensitivity to bright light
As the condition progresses, the symptoms become more frequent, and facial spasms may develop.
Treatment of Benign Essential Blepharospasm
There is no proper treatment for Benign Essential Blepharospasm.However many treatment option can reduce its severity.Oculinum into the muscles of the eyelids is an approved treatment for blepharospasm. Medications taken by mouth for blepharospasm are available but usually produce unpredictable results. Any symptom relief is usually short term and tends to be helpful in only 15 percent of the cases.A surgical procedure (Myectomy) to remove some of the muscles and nerves of the eyelids, is also a possible treatment option. Acupuncture, chiropractic, nutritional therapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, chiropractic are some alternative treatment method.
Prevention of Benign Essential Blepharospasm
This disease is not preventable.
