Arteriovenous Malformation
INFORMATION ON ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION
An arteriovenous malformation may be defined as a tangle of blood vessels that disrupts flow of blood in the brain. A congenital defect, it is the leading cause of stroke in young people.
CAUSES OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION
The causes of arteriovenous malformation is yet unknown.
SYMPTOMS OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION
1. Headache.
2. Vision changes.
3. Seizures.
4. Muscle weakness, any part of the body.
5. Decreased sensation, any part of the body.
6. Mental status change.
7. Confused, disoriented.
8. Irritability.
9. Stiff neck.
10. Speech impairment.
11. Smell – impaired.
12. Movement – dysfunctional.
13. Fainting.
14. Facial paralysis.
15. Eyelid drooping.
16. Ear noise/buzzing.
17. Dizziness.
18. Consciousness – decreased.
DIAGNOSIS OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION
In order to verify the presence of arteriovenous malformation following should be perform:-
1. MRI.
2. CT scan.
3. EEG.
TREATMENT OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION:-
The goal of treatment of arteriovenous malformation is to prevent further complications by limiting bleeding, controlling seizures and, if possible, removing the arteriovenous malformation.
Treatment is usually required. Open brain surgery, endovascular treatment, and radio surgery are some of the treatments used. Often these treatment options will be used in combination. Very large arteriovenous malformation may short-circuit blood flow enough to cause cardiac decompensation in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to compensate for bleeding in the brain
