Alper Disease
INFORMATION ON ALPER’S DISEASE
Alper’s Disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that develops from childhood. Symptoms include increased muscle tone with exaggerated reflexes (spasticity), seizures, loss of cognitive ability (dementia) and, in many cases, liver disease.
CAUSES OF ALPER’S DISEASE
The favorable event which leads to the development of Alper’s disease are:-
1. Biochemical fault.
2. Blockage in the brain.
3. Injury to brain.
SYMPTOMS OF ALPER’S DISEASE
1. Mental retardation.
2. Hypotonia.
3. Stiffness in limb.
4. Blindness.
DIAGNOSIS OF ALPER’S DISEASE
1. MRI.
2. EEG.
3. Liver functioning test.
TREATMENT OF ALPER’S DISEASE
There is no cure for Alpers' disease and, currently, no way to slow down its effect. Anticonvulsants may be used to treat the seizures. However, caution should be used when selecting valproate as therapy since it may increase the risk of liver failure.
