What is Urinary Incontinence
Urinary Incontinence can be defined as an inability to control urination. In other terms we can say that urinary incontinence means that you are unable to control when you urinate. Urinary Incontinence can be divided into four parts-
1) Stress incontinence - when urine leaks because of sudden pressure on your lower stomach muscles
2) Urge incontinence - This occurs when the need to urinate comes on too fast ,before you can get to a toilet.
3) Overflow incontinence- It is caused by an overfilled bladder.
4) Functional incontinence- when you have normal urine control but have problem in getting to the bathroom in time.
Causes of Urinary Incontinence
There are many causes of Urinary Incontinence. Common causes are given below-
1) Urinary tract infection
2) Diabetes
3) High calcium levels
4) Weakened pelvic muscles
5) For men, enlarged prostate gland or prostate surgery
6) For women, thinning and drying of the skin in the vagina or urethra
Signs and Symptoms of Urinary Incontinence
Symptoms are depends upon the type of urinary incontinence .symptoms of urinary incontinence are given below -
1) Rapid bladder infections
2) Leakage of urine
3) Leakage of urine that began or continued after surgery
4) Abnormality such as spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis
5) Inability to urinate
6) An increased rate of urination
7) Abnormal urination
8) Progressive weakness of the urinary stream
Treatment of Urinary Incontinence
Treatment can be done according to the type of Urinary Incontinence and its causes. If you have Urinary Incontinence because of some medical problem then it will be controlled after the treatment of your medical problem. In some type of Urinary Incontinence bladder training and Kegel exercises may helpful. The treatment of Urinary Incontinence also includes the medicine and surgery .
Prevention
Drink lots of water daily. Proper medical checkup is needed if you have this problem.
