What is Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic Kidney Disease can be defined as a growth of numerous cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys. It's a Genetic disorder. It reduces the kidney function and increases the chance of kidney failure.

Causes of Polycystic Kidney Disease

the genetic defect may cause the formation of cysts in the kidneys. In other terms we can say that chromosomes, a thread like structure, contain our genes and responsible for our individual characteristics. Just one missing or faulty chromosome can cause a birth defect.

Polycystic Kidney Disease has two forms -
1) Dominant Inheritance - When a child inherit one PKD gene from one parent
2) Recessive Inheritance - When a children inherit two PKD genes one from each parents.

In some cases PKD is not severe, but occurs because of spontaneous gene mutation

Signs and Symptoms of Polycystic Kidney Disease

Common Symptoms of PKD are given below -
    1) Frequent infections
    2) Blood in the urine
    3) Anemia
    4) Kidney stones
    5) heart murmur
    6) brain aneurysm
    7) Hernia
    8) the abdominal pain may be felt in any part of the abdomen
    9) nail abnormalities
    10) painful menstruation
    11) joint pain
    12) Drowsiness
    13) High blood pressure.
Treatment

The main goal of treatment is to control the symptoms and maintaining kidney functions. By regular examinations and diagnostic tests, your doctor will monitor you. It is important that keep you blood pressure normal so that you can take some dietary restriction. Patients with anemia are given iron supplements, and infections are treated with antibiotics. Patients with anemia are given iron supplements. Antibiotics are very useful to reduce the infection. When cysts bleed or become infected, in that case the surgical treatment is required. Dialysis is another treatment method in which the waste products are filtered from the blood but this method is no longer effective then the surgical plantation.

Prevention

As we know PKD is a inherited disease so there is no prevention method for it .So it is very necessary that follow you doctor's suggestion. Try to control your high blood pressure by some dietary restriction such as take low salt and low fat in your food .Avoid smoking and alcohol.
