What is Kidney Stone Disease

Kidney stone disease is very common in adults. These kidney stones are stone like masses. It is very hard structure and can be found in one or both kidneys. In most of the cases it is painless (when in the kidney) but some times it is very painful (When it travels from the kidney to bladder).

Causes of Kidney Stone Disease

The main cause of formulation of kidney stones is out of balance of salt and minerals in the urine .There are different kinds of kidney stones can be formed in the urine, Which are given below-
1) Calcium stones
2) Uric Acid Stones
3) Struvite stones
4) Cystine Stones

Calsium stones are most common stones that are found in kidney. These types of stones are made of calcium an oxalate that is naturally found in some foods, so take food which contains these chemicals in some limit. Excess vitamin D, overactive parathyroid glands are some other factors.

Uric acid Stone are made because of excess use of meat.Struvite Stone is made because of ammonia .Amonia is chemical which cause urinary tract ifection. Cystine Stones are caused by a hereditary disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Stone Disease

In some cases, kidney stones do not move from kidney to uretor, these stones are very small in size and doesn't cause any symptom. These stones are known as a silent stones.

Kidney Stones that causes the blockage or moves down the uretor, results the following symptoms-
1) Vomiting
2) Pain in the back on one or both sides
3) Bloody or smelly urine
4) Fever and chills
5) A burning sensation during urination
6) A frequent urge to urinate

Treatment of Kidney Stone Disease

The treatment of the kidney stone can be done according to its type and causes of the stone. In most of the cases there is no need of surgery. To move a stone out of the body, drink lots of water and keep yourself physically healthy.

But in the severe cases such as in any type of infection, or blockage or kidney damage, there is necessary to remove stone. Antibiotics are used to reduce any infection. There are several ways to pass the large stones.

1) Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
2) Ureteroscopic stone removal
3) Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
4) Parathyroid surgery

Prevention

It is easy to prevent with kidney stones if the cause and type of kidney stone is known -
1) Take two to three liters water. Water is best way to move the stone.
2) Avoid taking food that has high level of calcium, oxalate and Amonia.

It is better that discuss dietary changes with your doctor.
