Analgesic nephropathy can be defined as a damage of one or both renal (kidneys) that is caused by over exposures of medications. Peacetime nephritis and Nephropathy - analgesic are the alternative names of Analgesic nephropathy. Analgesic nephropathy is a one type of toxic injury to the kidney.
Causes of Analgesic Nephropathy
Analgesic nephropathy is a result of chronic ingestion of analgesics, especially over-the-counter medications that contain phenacetin or acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen. It occurs in 4 people out of 100,000 people (mostly occurs in women over 30 years).
Signs and Symptoms
Common symptoms of Analgesic nephropathy are given below-

1) Decreased alertness (Lethargy, Drowsiness, Confusion, delirium)
2) Nausea, vomiting
3) Decreased urine output
4) Blood in the urine
5) Fatigue
6) Weakness
7) Swelling
8) Bleeding or easy bruising
9) Renal colic (occasional) ,back pain, Flank pain
To prevent further damage and to treat any existing renal failure, treatment is necessary. Avoid OTC medications .The treatment of Analgesic nephropathy includes fluid restriction, dietary changes, dialysis or kidney transplant. To control of chronic pain, behavioral modification, Counseling or similar interventions are some alternative methods.
Prevention
Always take advise of your doctor when you use any medications specially OTC medications. Never take overdose of any medication.
