Biliary Atresia

INFORMATION ON BILIARY ATRESIA:-

Biliary atresia is a rare disease whose symptoms generally found in infants. Biliary atresia results in inflammation & obstruction of ducts which carry bile from the liver to intestine.

CAUSES OF BILIARY ARTESIA:-

The causes of development of biliary atresia are not completely understood. But, biliary atresia may occur due to improper formation of bile ducts during pregnancy. Another reason for biliary atresia is due to damage & harm to bile ducts by the body's immune system in response to a viral infection acquired after birth.

SYMPTOMS OF BILIARY ATRESIA:-

1. Jaundice.
2. Enlargement of liver with hardening.
3. Intense ittiching.

DIAGNOSIS OF BILIARY ATRESIA:-

1. Blood test.
2. Urine test.
3. Liver functioning test.
4. Testing of clotting function.
5. Examination of bile ducts and gallbladder using ultrasound technique.
6. X-ray or radioactive test of liver.
7. Liver biopsy.

PREVENTION OF BILIARY ATRESIA:-

The most common treatment for biliary atresia is an operation called the Kasai procedure. (named after the surgeon who developed it). During this Operation the surgeon removes the damaged ducts outside of the liver and attempts to create a new drainage system for the bile by connecting a piece of the baby’s intestine to the liver. Surgeons have found they achieve better results if the Kasai operation is done during the baby’s first 8 weeks of life. This operation is not always successful and two thirds of the babies who undergo this operation will eventually require assessment for liver transplant at some stage during their life.
