Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian cysts

Ovarian cyst are small fluid-filled sacs. Ovarian cyst develops on women’s ovaries. Not all cysts are harmful but some may cause problem like bleeding and pain.
The types of ovarian cyst are given below -

1) Functional Cyst – This is the most common type of ovarian cysts. This type of cysts is formed during ovulation. In menopausal women, it rarely occurs, because eggs are no longer being produced.
2) Dermoid Cyst – This is a type of ovarian cysts which are filled with various types of tissues including hair and skin.
3) Endometrioma Cysts – It forms when endometrial tissue (the type that lines the inside of the uterus) invades an ovary. It is known as chocolate cysts of endometriosis.
4) Cystadenoma Cysts – It develops from the cells on the surface of your ovary.
5) Polycystic Ovarian Diseases - Women who don’t ovulate on a regular basis can develop multiple cysts.

Causes of Ovarian Cyst

There are various type of ovarian cyst. Follicular cyst is most common type of ovarian cyst that is caused by the growth of a follicle. Follicle is the normal fluid-filled sac that containing egg. When the follicle grows and becomes larger than normal during the mensural cycle and does not able to release the egg then follicular cyst forms .
Some other causes are given below -

1) Irregular menstrual cycles
2) early menstruation
3) Infertility
4) Tamoxifen therapy for breast cancer
5) Ovarian cancer


Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cyst

There are number of symptoms that are related to ovarian cyst -

1) During intercourse feel pelvic pain
2) Feel fullness and heaviness in your abdomen.
3) Feeling of pressure on your bladder and rectum.
4) When you are pregnant feel breast tenderness.
5) Before your period begins or after end you feel some pelvic pain
6) Appendicitis
7) Intestinal inflammation
8) Diverticulitis
9) Gall bladder disease
10) Bladder infection
11) Kidney stone


Treatment for Ovarian cyst

The Treatment of ovarian cyst depends upon the size and type of cyst, the women’s age and general health. In some cases functional ovarian cysts can be dissolved without any medical treatment but some times physician prescribes oral contraceptives or hormones to shrink functional ovarian cyst. Women who opt oral contraceptives are rarely affected by functional cyst. But it is not much effective in other types of cyst. In some cases there is need of surgery.
