Paranasal Sinus Cancer
INFORMATION ON PARANASAL SINUS CANCER:-
Paranasal sinus cancer may be defined as a disease in which cancer cells (malignant) are found in the tissues of the paranasal sinuses or nasal cavity. The nasal cavity is the passageway just behind the nose through which air passes on the way to the throat during breathing. The area inside the nose is called the nasal vestibule. Paranasal Sinus is also known as Cancer of the paranasal sinus.
CAUSES OF PARANASAL SINUS CANCER:-
The main factors which leads to the development of Paranasal Sinus cancer are:-
1. Heavy smoking of tobacco.
2. Occupational exposure to dusts from wood, textiles.
SYMPTOMS OF PARANASAL SINUS:-
Paranasal Sinus cancer shows following symptoms:-
1. Sinuses that are blocked and not clear
2. A growth or mass on the face, nose, or palate
3. A lump or sore inside the nose that does not heal
4. Frequent headaches or pain affecting the sinus region
5. Pus draining from the nose
6. Decreased sense of smell
7. Numbness or pain in parts of the face
8. Loosening, pain, or numbness of the teeth
9. Swelling or other problems with the eyes
10. Problems with dentures
DIAGNOSIS OF PARANASAL SINUS CANCER:-
Clinically Paranasal Sinus cancer can be identified by:-
1. X-ray of chest.
2. CT scan.
3. MRI.
TREATMENT OF PARANASAL SINUS CANCER:-
Below are some of the treatments that are used for treating cancer of the paranasal sinus:-
Surgical procedure—
1. Removal of the cancer
2. Radiation therapy: use of high-dose X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.
3. Chemotherapy: The use of drugs to kill cancer cells.
In case when cancer is found in the nose (nasal vestibule), treatment can be one of the following:
Surgery
1. Both external-beam and internal radiation therapy or it can be any one of them.
2. Surgery if the cancer comes back following treatment
3. Chemotherapy before surgery or radiation therapy.
4. Chemotherapy following surgery with or without radiation therapy.
5. Chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy.
In case when cancer is found in the maxillary sinus, treatment can be one of the following:-
1. Surgery to remove the cancer.
2. Special type of radiation therapy given before or after surgery.
3. Chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy.
