ANOSMIA
INFORMATION ON ANOSMIA:-
Anosmia may be defined as partial or total loss of the sense of smell. Anosmia is usually an result of nasal congestion or obstruction, but it can sometimes indicate a neurological disorder. Loss of the sense of smell may be idiopathic (without any identifiable cause). Anosmia occurs normally with aging. In most cases, there is no obvious or immediate cause, and there is no treatment.
CAUSES OF ANOSMIA:-
The various factors which are responsible for development of anosmia are:-
1. Natural aging process
2. Recent viral upper respiratory infection
3. Nasal decongestants
4. Lead poisoning
5. Drugs
6. Radiation therapy
7. Nasal or sinus surgery
8. Tracheostomy
9. Nasal or brain tumors
SYMPTOMS OF ANOSMIA:-
The only and the important symptom shown by anosmia is the loss of ability to identify smell.
DIAGNOSIS OF ANOSMIA:-
Doctors and scientists together developed some tests to determine the extent and nature of a person's smell disorder. Tests are designed in order to measure the smallest amount of odor which patients can detect as well as their perfection in identifying different smells. In this way, doctors can easily determine whether patients have hyposmia, anosmia, or another kind of smell disorder.
TREATMENT OF ANOSMIA:-
The main aim for the treatment of anosima is to correct loss of sense of smell. Treatment can include antihistamines (if the condition is related to allergy), surgical correction of physical blockages, treatment of other disorders, changes in medication, and so on. Avoid excessive use of nasal decongestants, which can lead to recurring nasal congestion.
If loss of the sense of smell is permanent, dietary counseling may include use of highly seasoned foods and stimulation of taste sensations that remain.
Caution should be taken to ensure safety around the home with smoke detectors and use of electric appliances rather than gas appliances or technologies that detect the presence of gas fumes in the home.
For loss of smell due to aging, there is no treatment.
