Pseudomembranous Colitis
INFORMATION ON PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS:-
Pseudomembranous colitis is a result of antibiotic therapy that causes sever inflammation in colon area (large intestine). Pseudomembranous is characterized by pus and blood in mucus in stool.
SYNOMS OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS:-
1. Antibiotic associated colitis.
2. Necrotizing colitis.
CAUSES OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS:-
This disease can easily be caused due to consumption of antibiotics such as ampicilline, clindamycine etc as a result of which bacterium clostridium difficile which normally present in intestine overgrow.
SYMPTOMS OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS:-
1. Watery diarrhea.
2. Urge to defecate.
3. Abdominal cramps.
4. Low-grade fever.
5. Bloody stool.
DIAGNOSIS OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS:-
In order to detect the symptoms of pseudomembranous clinically following tests are carried out:-
1. An immunoassay for C.difficile toxin.
2. Colonoscopy.
3. HIV test.
4. Stool culture.
PREVENTION OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS:-
Prevention from pseudomembranous can be achieved by following ways:-
1. Medicinal treatment.
2. Operational treatment.
MEDICINAL TREATMENT OF PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS:-
In order to prevent pseudomembranous colitis antibiotic must be stop as soon as possible. Metronidazole is mostly used to treat pseudomembranous colitis but vancomycin may also be used.
Rehydration with electrolyte solutions or intravenous therapy is the best way to regain of fluid that has been lost with diarrhea.
OPERATIONAL TREATMENT PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS:-
In rare case surgery is required which is been carried out by removal of colon.
