Hemochromatosis
INFORMATION ON HEMOCHROMATOSIS:-
Hemochromatosis may be defined as the disease due to which body store and absorb too much iron. This extra iron is stored in organs and damages it. If untreated then Hemochromatosis causes organ failure.
CAUSES OF HEMOCHROMATOSIS:-
1. Hereditary.
2. Genetic defect.
SYMPTOMS OF HEMOCHROMATOSIS:-
1. Joint pain.
2. Abdominal pain.
3. Heart problem.
4. Loss of sex.
DIAGNOSIS OF HEMOCHROMATOSIS:-
In order to predict Hemochromatosis clinically following test should be made:--
1. Serum iron test.
2. Ferritin test.
3. Liver biopsy.
4. Total iron binding capacity test (TIBC).
5. CT scan.
6. Liver functioning test.
7. Ultrasound.
8. MRI test.
PREVENTION FROM HEMOCHROMATOSIS:-
Prevention from Hemochromatosis can be done by using various therapies in the very early stage of the disease. The basic therapies that are employed are;
Phlebotomy which is the process of removal of blood, as a result of which excess iron in the blood also removed.
Testosterone therapy is employed to restore lost sexual desire.
Subject diagnosed with Hemochromatosis must follow a special diet plan to help to maintain lower serum ferritin.
