Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

INFORMATION ON GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux into esophagus.

When esophagus lining is touched by stomach acid then it produce burning sensation.


CAUSE OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

1. Alcohol.
2. Pregnancy.
3. Smoking.
4. Over weight.
5. Spicy food.
6. Chocolate.
7. Drinks and caffeine.

SYMPTOMS OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

1. Heartburn.
2. Chest pain.
3. Trouble while swalloing.
4. Cough.
5. Bad breath.
6. Acid regurgitation.


DIAGNOSIS OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

In order to detect gastroesophageal reflux disease following test may be considered:-

1. Barium esophagogram.
2. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy
3. Esophageal manometry.
4. pH monitoring.
5. Radionuclide measurement.



PREVENTION FROM GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

The treatments which are helpful in curing gastroesophageal reflux disease are:
1. Medicinal treatment.
2. Operational treatment.


MEDICINAL TREATMENT OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

The medicinal treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease includes intake of antacid after meal, proton pump inhibitor, prokinetic agent which help increase mobility of esophagus and stomach.


OPERATIONAL TREATMENT OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE:-

When medicinal treatment proves to be failure then it comes to operational treatment to remove the symptoms. The various surgical procedures available are:-

1. Fundoplication.
