Hives

DEFINITION

Hives are usually caused by allergic reaction by food and medicine, It is often itchy and red welts are found on the surface of the skin. Urticaria is the medical name for hives


SYMPTOMS

The main symptom of Hive is Itching and Swelling on the surface of the skin which is red with clearly defined edges. The red welts sometimes enlarges and spread to make large area of raised skin. Hives can change their shape and size . It can disappear and re-appear within minutes and hours.

CAUSES

When a person has allergic reaction to a substance, Chemicals like histamine is released into the bloodstream which causes swelling, itching and other symptoms. It is the common reaction particularly in the people with other allergies like hay fever.

When there is swelling around the face particularly on the lips and eyes. This reaction is called as angiodema.The causes are there like medicines, fish, eggs, pollen, insect bites etc.


TREATMENT

In the case of mild hives there is no need of treatment. It disappears on its own. Cool compresses should be applied on the welts. It reduces pain and swelling. Avoid tight fitting clothes and hot baths.

Calamine lotion should be applied on the affected area. But if the reaction is in the throat then it can make the person difficult to breathe.
