Acanthosis Nigricans
DEFINITION
Acanthosis nigricans is a skin problem characterized by dark, thick, soft skin in body folds and wrinkles.
SYMPTOMS
Acanthosis nigricans normally appears gradually and doesn't cause any symptoms other than changes in skin.
Ultimately, dark, soft skin with very visible markings and wrinkles appears in the armpits and neck. The lips,palms,feet’s sole or other region may be affected
CAUSES
Acanthosis nigricans is very common among the people of Africa. In some cases it is genetically inherited.Acanthosis nigricans can lead to obesity and many endocrine problems. This is very common in diabetic patients. Acanthosis nigricans can be caused by human growth hormone or oral contraceptives.Person suffering with cancer of genitointestinal or gastrointestinal tracts or with lymphoma may also develop severe cases of acanthosis nigricans.
TREATMENT
No specific treatment is needed for Acanthosis nigricans,because it usually causes changes to the appearance of the skin.
