In chemical peel process a layer of skin is removed with a chemical preparation.
Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, and legs.
Different types of chemical peel are - superficial, medium and deep. Superficial chemical peels are easy to apply and the time needed is also minimal. A full-face deep chemical peel takes 1 to 2 hours to perform.
Trichloroacetic acids (TCA). TCA solution is generally used in medium chemical peel. It is used for skin with moderate sun damage, surface wrinkles, or uneven tone or pigment abnormalities.
The solution used in deep cosmetic skin peel is a phenol-croton oil mixture. This solution should be used with caution as it can cause permanent lightening of the skin. It is applied with cotton swabs on the area to be treated. There is a slight burning sensation. Shortly after the solution is applied, the skin becomes white and then turns red.
Depending upon the type of chemical facial peel the recovery time may vary. After few days of procedure completion a new bright pink color skin emerges which become normal after few days.
Side effects
Infection ,scarring can occur with strong acids. The patient may also feel discomfort. Hypopigmentation may also occur .Phenol is though rarely, used for full-face peeling can also permanently bleach the skin.
