Breast reduction also known as reduction mammaplasty is the surgical procedure in which excess of skin and fat are removed from the breasts. The breasts are then reshaped and nipples are repositioned to form smaller breasts.
Different techniques are used in breast reduction but the most common procedure is that in which an incision is made in anchor shape which extends around the areola, down the breast between the breast and abdomen and horizontally in the crease under the breast. Excess of fat and skin is removed to reduce the size.
In some cases, the nipple and areola remain attached to the breast. But if the breasts are very large and droopy then the nipple and areola are removed and reattach at a higher position as a skin graft.
Breast reduction surgery is done under a general anesthetic. The patient feels comfort in upper back, neck and shoulders after surgery.
