Pneumonia

INFORMATION ON PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is a general term that refers to an infection of the lungs, which can be caused by a variety of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Pneumonia begins as upper respiratory tract infection. Most commonly, it is the result of infections, but it can occur as a result of chemical injury. The causative agent may reach the lung via the blood stream or from direct inhalation.

CAUSES OF PNEUMONIA
Five main causes of pneumonia:

4. Infectious agents as fungi.
5. Various chemicals.

SYMPTOMS OF PNEUMONIA
Symptoms of pneumonia are:
1. Fever.
2. Chills.
3. Cough.
4. Unusually rapid breathing.
5. Breathing with grunting or whezing sounds.
6. Vomiting.
7. Chest pain.
8. Abdominal pain.
9. Decreased activity.


DIAGNOSIS OF PNEUMONIA
The diagnosis of pneumonia is usually made from a medical history.
Test made under diagnosis are:

1. A physical examination.
2. Chest X-ray.
3. Blood tests are generally performed when pneumonia is suspected.
4. Renal function may have deteriorated if there is sepsis.
5. CT scanning of the lungs can be required to differentiate possible causes.


TREATMENT OF PNEUMONIA
Bacterial pneumonia is often treated with penicillin, ampicillin-clavulanate and erythromycin. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, such as cefuroxime, ampicillin-clavulanate, ofloxacin, and trimethoprim-sulfanethoxazole. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, such as erythromycin. In addition to antibiotics, other treatments for pneumonia include rest, adequate fluid, and supplemental oxygen to raise the level of oxygen in the blood.
