Glandular fever

INFORMATION ON GLANDULAR FEVER
Glandular fever is a viral infection, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. The vast majority of people with glandular fever will make a full recovery and it is extremely rare to develop it again. Glandular fever can affect anyone but it is most common in young adults and teenagers. The disease is, among other things, characterized by a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and extreme fatigue.

CAUSES OF GLANDULAR FEVER
Glandular fever is a virus infection causing sore throat, fever, enlarged and tender glands, and sometimes inflammation of the liver. It frequently causes a prolonged period of tiredness and debility. The virus that causes glandular fever is known as Epstein-Barr virus Once people are infected, the virus stays in a few cells in their body for the rest of their life. Glandular fever is spread through close contact with saliva, such as kissing, and possibly through sharing cups, toothbrushes, etc.

SYMPTOMS OF GLANDULAR FEVER
Symptoms of Glandular Fever are:
1. Sore throat and swollen tonsils.
2. Enlarged and sore lymph glands.
3. Flu symptoms.
4. Swollen Eyes.
5. Aching muscles.
6. Chills.
7. Headaches.
8. Loss of appetite.
9. Fatigue, which may be severe.
10. Rash, which is usually not itchy.


DIAGNOSIS OF GLANDULAR FEVER
Test under glandular fever are:

1. Glandular fever can usually be diagnosed with a blood test.
2. A throat swab may also be taken to rule out throat infections caused by bacteria.
3. Your doctor may also take a throat swab to rule out any throat infections.

TREATMENT OF GLANDULAR FEVER
There is no specific treatment for glandular fever. Antibiotics do not work for virus infections. Taking paracetamol to the maximum dose can help relieve the sore throat and bring the temperature down. It is vital to drink plenty of fluids such as water and fruit juices. For people over 12, soluble aspirin dissolved in water and then gargled for a few minutes often relieves sore throats. Steroids help reduce severe inflammation of the throat so avoiding any difficulties in breathing or swallowing. Because of the possibility of a ruptured spleen, sport should be avoided while the spleen is swollen. Check with your doctor.
