Bedwetting

INFORMATION ON BEDWETTING
Bedwetting is an issue that millions of families face every night. It is extremely common among kids who are under the age of 6, and it can last into the preteen years. Physicians stress that enuresis is not a disease, but a symptom, and a fairly common one. Occasional accidents may occur, particularly when the child is ill. About 15 percent of children wet the bed after the age of three and boys wet their beds more than girls. Bedwetting runs in families but most bedwetters do not have emotional problems.

DIAGNOSIS OF BEDWETTING
A routine urine test usually is performed to rule out any urinary tract infection or kidney disease. An x-ray of the kidneys and bladder may be done if a physical problem is suspected.
TREATMENT OF BEDWETTING
Urgency can be helped by drugs. Similarly, bladder stones can be removed, urinary infections treated, and constipation relieved. Treatment of diabetes is often difficult in children, but is essential. Medications are also available to treat bedwetting. A complete history, physical examination and urine test should be done before beginning medications.
